Vocabulary and Terminology

 

Kamae- Forms (Mental), Stance

Shizen no Kamae –Natural Stance

Ichimonji no Kamae­- Character One Stance, First Stance

Jumonji no Kamae– Character Ten Stance, Tenth Stance

Doko no Kamae– Angry tiger Stance

Hira no Kamae– Flat Stance

Hicho no Kamae- Flying Bird Stance

Hoko no Kamae – Angry Bear Stance

Fudoza no Kamae- Inmovable Posture or Warrior Posture

Seiza no Kamae– Seated Posture

Seigon no Kamae – Same as Ichimonji no Kamae except that the lead arm is bent at the elbow and the hand is positioned at the opponents eyes

 

 

Dojo Etiquette

Onigaishimasu – Please instruct me.  Said when bowing in to train with a partner and at the start of class.

Domo Arigato Gozaimasu – Thank you Very Much.  Said when bowing out to a training partner and at the end of class.

Dozo – Please

Shikin harimitsu dai komyo- May my next act bring enlightenment.  Said at the beginning and end of class.

 

Numbers

Ichi (pronounced  ee-chee) One         Rokkyu (Pronounced Row-Ku)- Six

Ni (knee) -Two                                   Shichi (pronounced She-chee) – Seven

San (Son)- Three                                 Hachi (pronounced Ha-chee) -- Eight

Shi  (She) – Four                                 Ku (Pronounced Q)-- Nine

Go- Five                                              Ju (Pronounced J-ou)-- Ten

 

Sticking Techniques

Fudo-Ken – Immovable Fist also, Tsuke

Shuto-Ken – Sword Hand Strike

Boshi-Ken – Inch Boy Finger Strike. (Like Fudo-Ken but strike only with the tipe of the thumb)

Shikan-Ken – Striking with the extended knuckles

 

 

Kicking Techniques

 

Soku gyaku geri – Kicking with the bottom of the foot and heel.

Sokki geri ( pronounced so-ki kerri) – Striking with the knee

 

Shanshin No Kata (Three Treasures, three Minds, Three points)

Chi no Kata (pronounced Chee ) – Earth Form

Sui no Kata (pronounced Swee) – Water Form

Ka no Kata – Fire Form

Fu no Kata ( pronounced foo) – Wind Form

Ku no Kata (pronounced koo) – Void Form

Ashi - Leg

Bo – Six foot training staff

Bokken – wooden training sword

Bujinkan Dojo – Warrior spirit school.  The tital of Hatsumi-sensei’s international dojo.

Chudan – Middle level

Dojo – Training Hall

Dojo Cho – Head of the Training Hall

Fu – wind

Gyaku – reverse

Hajime – Begin

Hanbo – The half bo staff

Henka- Change or variation of a technique

Hira – Flat

Kaiten – rolling

Kamae – form or stance

Kote - wrist

Kudaki – to crush or smash

Midgi – Right

Mokuso – Close eyes in reflection.  Said at the start of zazen

Motte – stop or switch.  The command to stop or switch movements

Nagare – flowing like water

Nage – throwing technique

Omote – outside

Rei – To bow

Seiza – Seated meditation posture.

Sensei – One who has walked before.

Sempai – Senior Student of the Dojo or class

Shiho Tobi – Four way leaping

Ten Chi – Heaven and Earth

Tori – receiver of gift or defender

Tsuki – Thrust

 

Tsuke – To attach or fix, puch

Ukemi – passive defense or rolling

Ura – inside

Ushiro – rear, back, rear direction

Yoko – sideways

Yoko Nagare – sideways flowing like water
